CHoCH vs MSS in Trading: Key Differences Explained
When I started learning market structure, I kept seeing two terms everywhere:
CHoCH (Change of Character)
MSS (Market Structure Shift)
Both seemed to describe the same thing: trend reversals. I'd watch a video where someone said: "This is a CHoCH." Then another trader would look at the SAME chart and say: "That's an MSS."
I was confused.
Are they the same? Are they different? When do I use which one?
Here's what I learned after 2 years of trading both:
They're related but NOT the same. And understanding the difference changed how I read market structure. Learn more about SMC Abbreviations.
CHoCH is the early warning.
MSS is the full confirmation.
In this guide, I'll show you:
- What CHoCH signals (and when it appears)
- What MSS signals (and how it's different)
- How to use both together
- Which one matters more for your entries
Let's end the confusion right now.
Is CHoCH and MSS The Same Thing?
No, Change of Character (CHoCH) is the first minor breake of structure that signals a trend might be changing. Market Structure Shift (MSS) is the main breake of structure that confirms the trend has changed
What CHoCH Tells Me:
When I see CHoCH, I think: "Something's changing. The trend is losing momentum." But I don't reverse my trades yet. CHoCH is a warning, not a reversal confirmation.
What MSS Tells Me:
When I see MSS, I think: "The reversal is confirmed. Time to trade the new trend." MSS gives me the green light to enter trades in the NEW direction.
CHoCH vs MSS: The Key Differences
| Factor | CHoCH | MSS |
|---|---|---|
| What it breaks | Internal level (high/low) | Main swing (major high/low) |
| When it appears | First (early warning) | Second (after CHoCH) |
| What it signals | Pullback or Continuation | Trend reversed |
| Trading action | Trade counter or continuation | Trade the new trend |
Here's the question I asked when I first learned this:
"If MSS is the confirmation, why do I need to know about CHoCH?" Good question. Here's why both matter:
Why CHoCH Matters:
- Early Warning
CHoCH tells me to STOP trading the current trend before I get hurt. If I'm in a long trade and I see CHoCH, I take profits or move my stop to breakeven. I don't wait for MSS to protect my capital.
- Better Timing
When I see CHoCH, I know MSS might be coming. I start preparing for reversal setups instead of being caught off guard.
- Avoid Late Entries
If I only wait for MSS, I might miss the early part of the new trend. CHoCH lets me position myself earlier (with proper risk management).
Why MSS Matters:
- Confirmation
Not every CHoCH leads to a full reversal.
Sometimes, price breaks a higher low (CHoCH), then recovers and continues the uptrend. MSS filters out these fake reversals.
- Lower Risk Entries
Entering after MSS = entering with confirmation. The new trend is already established. Less chance of getting faked out.
- Clear Structure
After MSS, the new trend structure is obvious. I know where highs and lows are. I know where to place stops.
My Approach:
On My SMC Trading Strategy, I use BOTH:
- CHoCH → Alerts me, stops me from new entries in old trend
- MSS → Confirms reversal, gives me green light for new trend entries
CHoCH + MSS together = complete reversal framework.
