Market Structure Shift (MSS) In Trading Simplified

In 2022, I bought EUR/USD at what I thought was a reversal.

Price had broken above a minor lower high (CHoCH). I thought: "Downtrend is over. Time to buy."

I entered long. Price pushed 20 pips up… then dropped 80 pips. I got faked out.

A trader told me: "CHoCH is just a warning. You needed to wait for MSS." Market Structure Shift (MSS) is the CONFIRMATION.

While CHoCH says "maybe the trend is changing," MSS says "the trend HAS changed."

In this guide, I'll show you:

  • What MSS actually confirms
  • How to spot it after CHoCH
  • Exactly when to enter reversal trades

This is the missing piece most traders skip.

What is a Market Structure Shift (MSS)?

A Market Structure Shift (MSS) happens when price breaks the MAJOR swing high
(in a downtrend) or MAJOR swing low (in an uptrend). It's the final confirmation that a trend has fully reversed.

Here's the key difference:

  • CHoCH breaks an intermediate level (higher low or lower high)
  • MSS breaks the MAIN level (the major low in uptrend, or major high in downtrend)

MSS in an Uptrend → Downtrend:

mss example on an up trend
  1. Price is making higher highs and higher lows
  2. CHoCH occurs (breaks below a higher low) ⚠️ Warning
  3. Price rallies, creating a lower high
  4. Price then breaks BELOW the major low → MSS ✅ Reversal confirmed

At this point, the uptrend is dead. A downtrend has officially begun.

MSS in a Downtrend → Uptrend:

mss example on an down trend
  1. Price is making lower highs and lower lows
  2. CHoCH occurs (breaks above a lower high) ⚠️ Warning
  3. Price drops, creating a higher low
  4. Price then breaks ABOVE the major high → MSS ✅ Reversal confirmed

The downtrend is over. An uptrend has begun.

MSS is NOT optional. It's the green light.

CHoCH = "Something might be changing"
MSS = "It has changed"

Without MSS, you're guessing. With MSS, you have confirmation.

How to Identify MSS In Trading?

MSS has a specific sequence. You can't skip steps.

Full MSS Trading Example (Uptrend to Downtrend):

mss example on an up trend

Step 1: Established Uptrend

  • Price is making higher highs (HH) and higher lows (HL)
  • Clear bullish structure

Step 2: CHoCH Occurs

  • Price breaks below a minor previous higher low (HL)
  • First warning sign

Step 3: MSS Confirmation

  • Price continues to drop and breaks BELOW the major swing low
  • This is MSS
  • Downtrend is now confirmed

From this point, I only look for SELL setups.

How to Trade Market Structure Shift (MSS)

MSS gives me the green light to trade the new trend. But I don't trade the MSS break itself. I wait for the pullback.

My Exact Process:

mss entry strategy example

Step 1: Wait for MSS Confirmation

I need to see price break the major high/low with a strong move.

Weak breaks (5-10 pips) often fail. I want 20+ pips of follow-through.

Step 2: Wait for the First Pullback

After MSS, price almost always retraces. This pullback is where I prepare my entry.

During the pullback, I identify my POI it can either be a FVG or OB. That's where I take my entry. Check out the SMC Abbreviations
