Dont Trade Double Top and Bottom | They are Liquidity

Double top and bottom aren't reversal patterns. They're liquidity magnets. Every beginner trading book teaches the same thing:

  • See a double top? Sell when it breaks down.
  • See a double bottom? Buy when it breaks up.

So everyone places their stops in the same spots:

  • Above the double top (buy stops)
  • Below the double bottom (sell stops)

That clustering? That's what smart money targets. They don't see reversal patterns. They see an easy way to make money.

In this guide, you'll learn:

  • Why equal highs and lows attract price
  • How liquidity sweeps work at double tops/bottoms
  • Exactly how to trade these setups

Stop treating them as reversal patterns. Start using them as liquidity maps.

What Are Equal Highs and Equal Lows?

Equal highs and lows are price levels that touch the same area multiple times.

Equal Highs (Double Top, Triple Top):

Price makes two or three peaks at roughly the same level.

Example: EUR/USD touches 1.1050 twice, creating equal highs.

Double Top Example

Equal Lows (Double Bottom, Triple Bottom):

Price makes two or three troughs at roughly the same level.

Example: GBP/USD touches 1.2500 twice, creating equal lows.

Why "Equal" Not "Exact":

The highs or lows don't need to be at the EXACT same price. Within 5-10 pips = equal.

What Makes Them Special:

Retail traders treat these as reversal patterns. SMC traders treat them as liquidity pools.

The Logic:

When price makes equal highs at 1.1050:

  1. Retail traders see "resistance"
  2. They place sell orders at 1.1050
  3. They place buy stops ABOVE 1.1050 (to protect shorts)
  4. Breakout traders place buy stops above 1.1050 (to catch breakouts)

Result: Massive cluster of buy stops sitting just above 1.1050. That's liquidity. And smart money knows it's there. Same logic applies to equal lows, sell stops cluster below them.

How to Trade Double Top and Bottom?

I don't trade double tops and bottoms like most traders do. I trade the liquidity sweep of Double Top and Bottom.

My Double Top and Bottom Strategy:

Step 1: Identify Equal Highs or Lows

I mark any price level that's been touched 2-3 times. I draw a horizontal line and label it "EQ Highs" or "EQ Lows."

Step 2: Wait for Price to Return

After the equal highs/lows form, price usually moves away. I wait patiently for price to come back to that level. No predictions. Just patience.

Step 3: Watch for the Sweep

When price approaches the equal highs/lows, I watch for a sweep of those lows or highs.

Step 4: Confirm with Structure

I need structure alignment so I wait for a choch. After the sweep and choch, I wait for the price to pull back to an order block of the choch. Then target the next structure level (1:3 RR minimum)
